Shows great potential. Jury is still out on battery life and outdoor night vision

Shows great potential. Jury is still out on battery life and outdoor night vision
Be advised, this is a bit longer than your average review...I've been looking for a camera system for some time that would provide the ability to monitor the outside of my house. I was not too interested in a wired solution due to the cost and other issues associated with installation. I was concerned about wireless solutions being able to provide the video bandwidth as well as the battery life to make them viable without having to constantly tinker with the setup or to change batteries. After reading a few articles, I decided to take a leap with the Arlo due to the claims about wireless range and battery life for the Cameras. I purchased the 2 camera set since part of my needs were to cover both forn and back yards. This review is perhaps a bit premature in that I've only had Arlo installed for about a week, but some clear perceptions have emerged in that short time.SetupThe instructions provided with the kit are pretty straight-forward and blessedly match the way the hardware operates. I've encountered products in the past where I had to wonder if the author of the provided documentation ever saw the product. Setting up the base station and pairing the cameras took maybe 10 minutes. Again, the provided start-up instructions were very clear and easy to follow with no head scratching moments at all during the process. The base station itself was simply a matter of determining a location with access to power and within a few feet of a hardwired network jack (A hardwired network connection is required for the base). Once plugged in and powered up, activating it was also simple to accomplish via web browser or the available app. I chose to use the web browser method since the location was next to a computer in my home office. The activation page requires the serial number fro m the base station which in my case was automatically populated (I assume because both my computer and the base station were on the same network and that allowed the Arlo setup software to 'find' the base without the need for me to key in the serial number information. After the Base Station was up and running, pairing the cameras only required installing the provided batteries and pressing the designated buttons on the base station and camera in the sequence indicated in the instructions. This had to be performed for each camera separately. Each camera then appeared in the status page on the Arlo web site with a name that appeared to correspond to the camera serial number. This name can be changed to something more meaningful (a step that I highly recommend). At this point. the basic setup is complete.Installation.After setup, I decided that for my initial trial, I would only put one camera outside and leave the other inside in the office. I felt this would give me a comparative evaluation of performance and battery life is very different circumstances. The 'inside' camera (now named "Office") was simply placed on a bookshelf where it had a view of the entry to the office. It was placed as suggested so that the primary motion would be across the field of view. I did not use any of the mounting hardware for this camera since I anticipated moving it once I had completed my initial testing. The other camera was mounted outside in a position to view my driveway and the walkway to my front door. Using one of the provided dome mounts, I mounted it approximately 8 feet above ground and angled so that movement up the driveway would serve as the primary trigger as it would be mostly across the field of view. Using the Rules editor on the web site, I set both cameras to activate on motion and record a 10 second video stream to be sent to my email address.Once both cameras were in position, I then returned to my web browser to check the results and experiment with the settings. Right away I noticed that the battery indicator for the outside camera showed a drop of one bar.I was concerned that this did not bode well for battery life expectations. A week later, the indicator has not changed, so I'm becoming less concerned about that as a major issue. Considering how cold it has been for the past week, I'm not surprised at some reduction in battery life due to the cold.OperationOver the past week, I've received a number of alerts (over 100 from the outside camera) and have checked the video captured by Arlo. A couple of observations:1. The video quality (which I have set at the default "optimized" setting), is surprisingly good, but the usable range is limited as described in the documentation to about 15-20 feet. I've included a picture taken from the outside camera2. The trigger delay for the motion detection appears to vary. Some videos captured with the alerts show people walking across the field of view while others only show them leaving the frame as if it is only catching the tail end of the motion. I've been adjusting the motion sensitivity settings to see what works best for my locations.3. At present, the Arlo site only allows you to be logged in from a single location. (probably a reasonable security measure). What I mean by this is that If you are logged in to the web site and then open the app on your phone, you will be immediately logged out of the web site. I have not yet tried the 'friend' feature to see what access or constraints are tied to other authorized users.4. As I mentioned earlier, we have had extremely cold weather this past week. In fact, I heard the weather person this morning state that it has been some of the coldest weather we have had in 20 years. The outside camera seems to be holding up well so far under fairly bitter conditions. In addition to the cold, we have had high winds as well as a couple of winter weather events (snow, freezing rain, etc). WHile the camera is mounter under a bit of an overhang to shield it from direct precipitation, it is also on the windward side of my house and has received its share of the 30-40 mph gusts we have had over the past week.5. Night vision effectiveness seems to be a bit variable. The indoor camera which is located in a modestly sized room appears to provide a useful night display. The outside camera does not switch into nighttime mode as consistently. I think it may be due to the mounting height above ground, so I'll continue to experiment with this to see what actually works.I know this has been a long review, but I wanted to cover these topics while they were fresh in my mind. Obviously, I will be monitoring the battery life of the camera units before making a final assessment and I will probably also move the camera from my office to the back yard to add a little bit more range to the evaluation. The current outside camera is probably no more than 30 feet from the base station in it's current location with only 2 intervening wooden framed walls (one being an exterior wall). Moving a camera to the backyard will at least double the distance from the base as well as add more walls in between. I'm holding off buying a third camera until I know more about battery life and range performance for a backyard view.So far, I'm impressed. The only area I would really like to see improve from my experience to date is the usability of the web site and app. Navigation and the use of the site to configure rules and other settings is not as intuitive as I would like. It took some trial and error to figure out how to do some things inspite of the directions in the downloadable manual. Some features I'm still trying to figure out.
